It represents their approach to their work, creatively as well as businesswise. The lecture revolves around their experiences with forming a small design bureau, the dynamic of a learning-by-doing proces and working as a team. A list of the studios inspirational work is presented, along with considerations about dialogues with critical clients as fuel for creativity, personal investment and growth.

The We Love Graphic Design seminar about contemporary graphic design was held in Copenhagen on october 1. 2011, arranged by HK Grafisk Kommunikation, Visuelt Forum (DJ) and LYNfabrikken.

About Roel Wouters
Trained as graphic designer, Roel works as an independent conditional designer / director in the field of interaction, media design and film.

His work often reflects on the systems or technology we use in our daily lives. Sometimes by deconstructing or changing fundamental parts of existing systems, sometimes by designing new ones to see what happens when people are using them. He applies this approach to all kinds of media: dynamic media (web, tools, animation and video) but also to print, installations and performances.

Together with Luna Maurer, Jonathan Puckey and Edo Paulus he has authored the Conditional Design Manifesto, a manifesto that promotes the idea of designing conditions rather than end results.

For the past few years he has been teaching interactive and graphic design courses at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Sandberg Institute, Yale University School of Art and the Piet Zwart Institute. His work has been exhibited and screened all over the world e.g. at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich, Britsh Film Institute, Sundance Film Festival.
Troika

About Troika:
Troika is a London collective founded by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel who are widely known for their experimental practise, sculptures, installations and projects that provoke and employ a cross-disciplinary approach and intersect between sculpture, architecture, and contemporary installation.

They met while studying at the Royal College of Art and subsequently started their studio in 2003.

Often merging technology with their artistic practice as a point of departure but also to actify the installations, Troika's work explores the intersection of scientific thought, observation and human experience in a rational and rationalized world, and describes how logic and reason live in the presence of the metaphysical and surreal.

While their work is often filled with polarities — solitude and interaction, transition and permanence, the artificial and the natural — their interest lies within man's resolve to synthesize these opposites.

In a spirit of optimism, they draw connections between radically different situations and look at our surroundings from a different perspective while setting the scene with scenarios and experiences that are notable in their formal simplicity and often touch upon our innate memories of sound, sight and movement.

Since establishing the studio in 2003 Troika's work has been exhibited, amongst others, at the Victoria & Albert Museum London, The Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Britain and MoMA New York. In 2010 Troika were selected to create three art installations for the UK Pavilion at the World Expo Shanghai. Troika's work is represented in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum Jerusalem, British Council, The Art Institute of Chicago, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum Of Modern Art New York.

Troika has authored two books to date: Digital by Design, Thames and Hudson, 2008; Moscow Style, Booth-Clibborn Editions, 2005, and, in 2009, won the D&AD Yellow Pencil for their digital sculpture 'Cloud' in London Heathrow Terminal 5 and their kinetic installation ‘Palindrome’ for the V&A in 2011.

Founded by Francesca Sarti in 2001, Arabeschi di Latte is a group of italian women designers with a passion for conviviality. The group's mission is to experiment with new design concepts that relate to food and focuses on its fascinating power to create situations and relationships.
Arabeschi di Latte is based on the idea of creating a "daily sense of happiness" that is pursued through various strategies of participation and interaction that respond to basic and pleasurable needs in our social life. Food becomes an experience. The Mediterranean conviviality is a key factor in this research and comes from Italian culture. Food is seen as a tool that leads to opportunities for getting together to share a simple meal. In the last 10 years, Arabeschi di Latte has created and exhibited a variety of food-related projects and events. These include objects, images and performances within different contexts.

Arabeschi di Latte Studio creates food concepts and bespoke events for companies, museums, associations, agencies, galleries and privates.
Clients can also choose from a variety of format that can be adapted to different situations and always have a site specific component. When creating its food concept, Arabeschi di Latte collaborates with the best local manufacturers and suppliers.

Karolina Kling exhibit in LYNfabrikkens BOX

KLING by KLING is a label created by London based Swede Karolina Kling. Since establishing the brand in 2006 the label has acclaimed international attention for its distinct prints and playful designs and has been described as Viktor & Rolf on acid. For the last two years she has reached a growing audience with her fourth collection, distributing worldwide.

With a background in Graphic Design, Karolina Kling has a unique take on fashion, both highly personal and yet commercial. The concept for each collection always consists of several layers; the patterns are always beautiful, but with more to them than what meet the eye. KLING by KLING is a world of dreams and the clothes are there to immerse the viewer with fantasies.
Because of her base in the graphic world, KLING sees herself as a graphic and product designer, rather than a fashion designer. Looking at fashion as if the fabric is just another substitute of a 3D medium with patterns and illustrations, rather than flat just images.

KLING has also worked applying her graphics on garments through other labels, such as H&M, Cheap Monday, Reebok, Nudie Jeans, Monki, Cheapo and Libero.
KLING has always worked with her graphics in a 3D way, her experiences in the past Includes designing conceptual engagement rings, shoes, bathroom collections, duvet covers and wallpapers.

OUTSIDE HER OWN LABEL
Besides working with her own label, Karolina Kling has experience In working with some of the most interesting film makers in Sweden, doing scenography and costume design in both film and music videos.

During two years (2005-2007) she was one of three designers behind the exhibition and event organization Fashion Deluxe, focusing on showing the works of young, upcoming fashion designers in various exhibitions. The latest exhibition was hold at the Ginza Gallery In Tokyo, Japan.

Lernert & Sander are two dutch artists and friends who decided that working alone was getting boring and started collaborating on art related projects. Since their first video Chocolate Bunny they've been working on commercials, leaders, art movies, documentaries and installations. Their aim is to make simple and communicative works, that takes little note of the existing border between contemporary art and commercial projects. Their highly esthetic, humorous and dedicated works are often challenging the media and its viewer, in a simple but very effective way. Their work was selected for international festivals in New York, Rio de Janeiro and Oberhausen.

Sander Plug (1969) works as a freelance graphic designer and artist. He graduated in 1993 as industrial designer at the technical university in Delft and finished his Masters in Art in 2004 at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. He has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin and Barcelona. He is a teacher in the graduation year of the Art Academy in Utrecht.

Lernert Engelberts (1977) works as a director and writer. He made Driving Miss Palmen, a Dutch soap set in India. He was editor/writer for RE-magazine. He wrote a dramatised garden program with Arjan Ederveen which he also directed and collaborated with director Michiel van Erp in 2006 for the documentary Warm Stories. Lernert also finishing his first highly critically acclaimed book of short stories Real Bad People.
About Tomás Alonso:
There is a strong human influence in my work. I’m particularly
interested in the relationship we have with objects and how these
objects relate to us and other things that surround us.
I enjoy experimenting with different materials and making the
most of their properties. Materiality is a very important part of my
work and is evident in the Stamp cutlery project.

I’d like my designs to appear simple, natural and almost obvious,
but with a quirkiness. I think there is an underlined sense of
functionality and romanticism that runs through all my work.
I try to arrive to the simplest element that then can be combined
into more complex structures, to provide users with the building
blocks to create their own environments.

For me it’s important that what I design makes its way into people’s
hands and people’s homes.

Christien Meindertsma

Christien Meindertsma explores the life of products and raw materials. For her first book, Checked Baggage (2004), Christien purchased a container filled with a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schiphol Airport after 9/11. She meticulously categorized all 3267 items and photographed them on a white seamless background. Christien’s second book, PIG 05049 (2007), is an extensive collection of photographic images that documents an astounding array of products that different parts of an anonymous pig called 05049 could support. With this book, Christien reveals lines that link raw materials with producers, products and consumers that have become so invisible in an increasingly globalized world.

<itunes:summary>Christien Meindertsma explores the life of products and raw materials.

With her designs Christien Meindertsma aims to regain understanding of processes that have become so distant in industrialization. Her work has been exhibited in MOMA (New York), The V&A (London) and the Cooper Hewitt Design museum (New York).
Born in Iceland, Katrin Olina studied Industrial Design at the E.S.D.I. in Paris before working in the European design studios of Philippe Starck (Paris) and Ross Lovegrove (London). Since then, she has worked predominantly as a graphic artist and illustrator in the fields of industrial design, fashion, interiors, print and animation. Her work has also been featured in several prominent museum and gallery exhibitions around the world.

Olina has developed a rich visual language that builds on research, experimentation and intuitive creative drawing processes that combine the use of technology with the hand drawn. Her imagery and graphics are often centered around natural elements and the imaginary. As her work has evolved, Olina has created a personal world where sense of wonder, new experiences and questions about the nature of things abound.

Olina has also collaborated with high tech companies such as materials producers Dupont Corian and 3M. Her clients have included porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal and furniture manufacturer Swedese. In addition, she has worked as a consultant and visualizer in the field of creative development for organizations such as Clear Village Foundation.

In 2008, she created Eulespiegel, an animation featuring otherworldly landscapes and imaginary creatures. Another recent project has been Cristal Bar in Hong Kong where her dream-like drawings cover every interior surface, enabling a new level of interactivity in three-dimensional space. Cristal Bar has won numerous international awards, including the Forum Aid Award in Stockholm, the SEGD Merit Prize in San Diego and the DV Culture Prize in Iceland in 2009. Olina is currently working on the natural history of the characters that populate her growing world and developing narratives around them.

Richard Sweeney

Richard Sweeney was born in Huddersfield, England in 1984. He discovered a natural talent for sculpture at Batley School of Art and Design in 2002, which led him to the study of Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models, which ultimately developed into sculptural pieces in their own right.

Richard’s practice combines the disciplines of design, photography, craft and sculpture, resulting in a varied output of work including graphic design and public sculpture commissions. Combining hand-craft with computer aided design and CNC manufacturing techniques, Richard seeks to maintain an experimental, hand-on approach, utilising the unique properties of often mundane materials to discover unique sculptural forms.

Richard is represented by Victor Felix Gallery in London.

Statement by the designer:
The Beta II installation for BOX comprises several metres of continuous, hand-pleated paper, which appear as writhing, fluid forms tracing the movement of line through space. Many hundreds of individual folds change the property of the paper, giving it rigidty, yet allowing it flex and bend within certain limits, giving the impression of smooth surfaces from what is in fact a compound curve achieved using only straight edges. Additionally, the piece features a specially designed carpet backdrop, which has been printed with a photograph depicting the deformation of a flat surface, onto which was projected a grid of parallel lines. The desired effect is to produce a three-dimensional effect, while also evoking the feeling of movement evident in the sculptural element.

Studio Suppanen is a design studio working in graphics, three-dimensional design and architecture based in Helsinki.

Our flexible approach and broad skill base means we can work across different media and on different scales, from graphics to product design and furniture, from interiors to architecture. Our research base also means that we are frequently asked to develop concepts for clients worldwide.

For us design is based on several factors: human experience, social behaviors, global, economic and political issues, physical and mental interaction, form, vision, and a rigorous understanding and desire for contemporary culture. Manufacturing is based on another collective group of criteria: capital investment, market share, production ease, dissemination, growth, distribution, maintenance, service, performance, quality, ecological issues and sustainability. The combination of these factors shape our objects, inform our forms, our physical space, visual culture and our contemporary human experience. These quantitative constructs shape business, identity, brand and value. This is what we are doing. Something that is poetry of manufacturing and life; Design.

Our commitment to tackling the challenges of today's living and working requirements means we constantly experiment with new ideas, materials and technologies, and encourages us to look beyond conventional forms and find new ways to support today's behaviour.

Over the last 11 years, Airside has built a solid reputation in the design and advertising world, and is in the unique position of being a truly multidisciplinary agency, undertaking work in all media from graphics and illustration to digital and interactive, as well as moving image.

Airside has a very strong environmental and sustainability ethos – the company was awarded a Green Mark for its internal practices and we are partners in Three Trees Don’t Make A Forest, an organisation devoted to promoting sustainability in the design community.

Airside likes to tell stories, and in order to do this have created a lot of work that is very illustrative. Airside understand the need to connect with people emotionally and have fun finding ways to do this.

Alex Maclean – Founding Director / Creative Director
Alex trained and worked in commercial interior design before going on to study Architecture and Interior Design at the Royal College of Art. His work on the MA led to a research fellowship, where he worked on developing ‘Information Environments’. Alex then began work in the emerging world of the internet and after freelancing on a number of computer modelling and internet projects, he started Airside with Nat and Fred in 1998. Alex is creative director at Airside, running moving image projects. He will follow a project from the initial creative meeting to final delivery, coordinating the design team and liaising with Airside’s project managers, keeping creative control of the project.

Anne Brassier – New Business
Anne has been at Airside since 2001 and handles all new business matters. From meeting clients to receive the brief and talk about projects, through to handling press and marketing once a project is completed, Anne is the client’s point of contact before and after a project is undertaken by Airside.

Anne is also mother to the Stitches – woolly creatures adopted to new homes via Airside’s online shop www.airsideshop.com She originally studied Computer Programming, particularly enjoying machine code. And now has a secondary career as a photographer specialising in weddings and performance photography (dance, theatre, film stills).

2012 architecten

Jan Jongert, 2012Architecten, presents the Dutch firm’s pioneering work in re-use, research and adaptation. Their architecture has featured Audi 100 windscreens turned into a shoe-shop’s shelving, and mountains of washing machines recombined to produce a futuristic mobile studio.

2012Architecten consider ‘reuse’ to be an integral design strategy. 2012Architecten is a Rotterdam based architecture office that utilises the contextual potential for design. This specific potential is inherent in the existing environment, energy resources or various waste materials. By taking the existing characteristics of the waste material into account in the early stages of the design, innovative applications and surprising forms are created.

The design process is not seen as linear but rather as one phase in a continuous cycle of creation and re-creation. In this lecture 2012Architects explain how they manage to find the "waste" materials using the harvest-map and how they intergrate their findings in the designs. <itunes:subtitle>Lecture with 2012 architecten /Rotterdam/ at LYNfabrikken Aarhus Denmark</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Jan Jongert, 2012Architecten, presents the Dutch firm’s pioneering work in re-use, research and adaptation.

Also inspiring projects will be shown. Duchi, the shoe-shop in the Hague made with reclaimed carglass windows and leftovers from a window frame factory. The Miele Space Station, the experiment with white-goods which ended up in Espressobar Sterk, the playground Wikado made out of windmillwings. And of course our latest realized project: Villa Welpeloo, the first example of a full-scale house made for 75% out of reclaimed materials.</itunes:summary>

ÅRHUS SOM EUROPÆISK KULTURBY 2017?
BOX intermezzo, 8.januar 2010 - 28.februar 2010.

From their base in Peckham the creative collective with the strange name, pushes the boundaries of London’s creative scene, as they combine design, art and fashion in funny and ironic ways.

The four members Chris Ratcliffe, Laura Cave, Anna Walsh and Hannah Havana are individually specialized in graphic design, painting and jewellery, and have experimented with design in many forms and shapes. But the philosophy of Garudio Studiage is all about collaborating and mixing disciplines, så together their mad minds and skilled hands create props, products, sets and displays for wonderfully bizarre events and exhibitions.

We can’t wait to see, what they will create, and we are sure, that it will be something out of the ordinary! Come and join us, as we open the exhibition on Friday, Dec. 4th at 4pm, and say thank you for a great 2009!

Jerszy Seymour

Having been born in Berlin and now working and living here again, Jerszy Seymour's Polish parents were ballet dancers so it might not be too difficult to get the balance right for him. The balance between being a contemporary and much sought after designer creating objects for established brands and institutions on the one hand, he is also a free-minded character who has spent years travelling the world working as a DJ, and does a lot of work that could easily be defined as art. He is surely a designer with a strong theoretical basis who in case of doubt always opts for the more challenging alternative. We met Jerszy in Berlin for an interview and he talks about current projects and eternal visions.

Quotes from Jerszy Seymour:"What is interesting is not what is design and what is art, but what is the space between"

"The feeling is very much, that we arrived at the late capitalism, which is offering satisfaction through a fetich desire off objects, so the design from its kind of grand modernist ideas of good products for the people, has come to an end, everybody can have what they want, and they can possible have as much off it as they want (...) so the new way is to say, ok design is about much more, its about how we affect living in our world and how that can be a part of life, but that doesnt mean it has to be about buying objects."

For the cover art of Gestalten’s new book Tangible: High Tough Visuals, Vallée uses his multidisciplinary graphic-inspired approach and stages his design spatially by crafting three-dimensional objects and lettering. The result – a stunning almost palpable cover!

Not limiting himself to print, he uses the stylistic means of graphic design to create art installations, motion graphics, animations and video designs. His playful graphics has gained him commissions and props from clients such as New York Times Magazine, MTV and Swatch to musicians like Kanye West. We met Julien, who’s recently moved to Berlin, while he was preparing his installation for his group exhibition here in the city. A Gestalten favourite, his work is also featured in a number of our books; Tactile, Fully Booked and Lemon Poppy Seed.

The exhibition shows both graphic design as typography, illustrations and much more, and product design represented by innovative reinterpretations of the design icon: the chair.
